How do you see current events lining up in the Middle East? It appears the Sunni --Shiite split is becoming more apparent. It is being discussed on the evening news. Notice the lack of support for Hamas from the Sunnis during the recent “Cast Lead” operation by the Israeli Government Their failure to rally the Moslem world reflects their animosity toward Iran. Which nations are lining up together? On one side, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan are the prominent Sunni nations aligned against Iran. Recall that Iranians are not Arabs, and there is also a racial factor in play. On the other side are Iran, Syria, Hezbollah and now Hamas. Hamas began as an offshoot of the Islamic Brotherhood in Egypt (Sunni), but now has tilted toward the other side, mostly because Iran funds them. Qatar has recently made overtures to the Iranian side also. Syria is a Sunni nation, correct? Yes, and I believe, in many ways, Syria is the most sought after nation in the Middle East. After Lebanese hero Rafik Hariri was assassinated, Syrian President Bashar al Asad was persona non grata in Saudi Arabia. Recently the Saudis and King Abdullah of Jordan have been making overtures toward him, to bring him back into the Sunni fold. But Mr. Asad himself is not a Sunni, correct? Yes, that’s right, he is an Allewite, a minority sect. In previous times they were considered a heretical cult. Their status was increased when a Shiite Imam in Lebanon declared them Shiite. This occurred during the reign of the previous dictator, Hafez al Asad, the father of the present president. What was the reason for the rise in influence of Syria? The American left had a lot to do with it. During the term of President Bush, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Arlen Specter and other left of center players visited him in Damascus. This fawning over a very leftist dictator when he was still politically weak, after presumably ordering the assassination of Hariri, is shameful. How do you think this will all play out? I believe it will be the antichrist that will unite all Moslems. According to their Hadith, he will “purify the Umma” before he takes over the world. The Umma is the entire body of Moslems. I believe he will do it by force. Historically, Islam has always conquered with the sword. In this case, I see antichrist conquering Egypt. This attack on the “King of the South,” is referenced in Daniel 11:42,43. This is clearly a mid-Tribulation event, he had just conquered Jerusalem in Daniel 11:41. Since Egypt is a Sunni nation, that would indicate the antichrist will be from the Shiite side of the equation. Don’t you agree the antichrist will begin his work at the beginning of the Tribulation? Yes, Revelation 6:2 tells us the tribulation begins when the antichrist goes out “conquering and to conquer.” The implication is that it takes 3 & 1/2 years to pull his Shiite coalition together, and defeat the Sunnis. Then he takes on the rest of the world. Why would the West allow that? French President Sarkozy appears to be in the driver’s seat right now. Due to the hedonism in the European countries, as well as their socialist system, they simply don’t have the finances for a powerful military machine. They will be no military match for the coming world leader. For whatever reason we don’t know, the United States will fall as the greatest world power, and be replaced by the revived Roman Empire. That is clear from Daniel Chapter 2, and has been accepted by eschatologists for decades. So you think the European Union represents the Revived Roman Empire? No, that is not correct. The EU represents only the Western “leg” of the ancient Roman Empire. The Eastern “leg” includes the Middle East and North Africa. French President Sarkozy is negotiating to bring that area into a coalition with the EU. The negotiations began with the so called Barcelona Process several years ago. I expect those nations, called the Mediterranean Union, to unite with the EU to fulfill the boundaries of the ancient Roman Empire. What about Iraq? I believe Iraq’s “democracy” is waiting for the United States to exit the area. Remember a radical Shiite cleric named Muqtada al Sadr? His Mahdi Army terrorized Iraq for years, and was a thorn in the side of the American military. Then there was a flurry of visits between Iraqi President Nouri al Maliki and Iranian President Ahmadinejad. There was even a very disconcerting picture of those two presidents holding hands. It seems some deal was struck. Suddenly, al Sadr stopped his terror activities. Al Sadr was probably funded by Iran, and told to cease and desist until the Americans withdraw. However, posters all over southern Iraq show pictures of Iraq’s most revered imam, Imam Hussein. With those posters today are pictures of the deceased Iranian Ayatollah Khomeini, and Muqtada al Sadr. I suspect he will rise, when the Americans withdraw. What about China? They have economic strength and a strong military? In my opinion, China will come into conflict with the Moslem forces right at the beginning of the Great Tribulation (second half of the Tribulation). I believe the “east” in Daniel 11:44 is China. What will be happening in Israel at this time? Google my recent column “Bible Codes and Prime Minister Netanyahu” to get my opinion on that. Furthermore, there is much scriptural evidence the Jews will be valiant warriors on their own behalf. They will not acquiesce, as they did under Hitler. The Maccabeans were the archtype for the Jews at the end of days. And the United States of America, what will be our role? My opinion is laid out in the CD series “2009 and Beyond,” and lines up with the George Washington prophecy. President Obama is, by his own words, a left-leaning politician. In his autobiography he mentions he chose Marxist friends in college. He spent 19 years in an anti-American Church. However, I believe that the President wants to be successful, and have an honored place in history. I further believe, like all first term presidents, he wants to be re-elected. Even more importantly, the Bible teaches us “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord” (Proverbs 21:1). This implies that for anyone chosen to be the most powerful man in the world, God has certain requirements. One of them is the right to influence the person’s heart. This lays the future of America squarely at the feet of the Christian community. We are obligated to pray for the President every day (1Timothy 2:1,2). Christians should stop complaining and start praying. What do you say to people who believe all this talk of “end times” is nonsense? End times means end of the age, not the end of the world. We are about to enter into the thousand year Millenial Reign of Christ. The evidence is overwhelming. However, “…the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand” (Daniel 12:10b). So you believe there’s reason to hope?
